Shock Therapy

Arms jitter,
lips quiver,
eyelids flutter,
furred ears tremble,
whiskers twitch,
suppressed whimpers,
a soft, tremulous moan...

What silent, unseen current
courses through our bed
and renders the four of you
unconscious?

Perhaps you struggle
to warn me back
from the quiet bedside.

Should I don insulated gloves
and drag you all to safety?

Or should I let you swim
your way to shore
through turbulent currents
flowing between this world
and the next?
